If you’ve walked the Bondi to Bronte path in Sydney, what would you think about a similar walkway in Newcastle? Between Memorial Drive and the ocean there’s a cliff (think of Strzelecki Lookout and then head south down towards Bar Beach) and there are plans to build a walkway along the cliff as a memorial to World War I and the BHP Steelworks. If you’re a fan of the Bathers’ Way walk from Merewether to Nobbys you’ll be familiar with the long uphill slog along Memorial Drive. But what would a walkway there look like and where will the money come from? I met up with Newcastle MP Tim Owen and architect Barney Collins right near Strzelecki Lookout to find out more about the future of some of Newcastle’s most stunning coastal assets.
