Tyrrell Street Substation
Providing electricity to the Newcastle CBD and surrounding areas, the new 33/11kv substation replaces the adjacent 1930's City Main substation. The development includes a 16 metre tall, three storey substation, transformer yard and associated smaller structures.
Nestled into the hill, the substation presents itself to Tyrrell Street with a form, scale, and selection of materials that is complementary to the character of the area.
Retaining walls and solid fences help define the character of the hill area. Sandstone blocks of various finishes and colonial bonded brickwork connect the building to its context and provide visual relief.
