Scratchley's Restaurant

Scratchley's Restaurant is now double the size of the previous existing restaurant and as well as being environmentally sustainable, takes advantage of the stunning waterfront views expanding from Newcastle Harbour to Nobby's Headland.

At all times the view and access to window seats was of critical importance. This was achieved through a linear plan running parallel with the harbour edge and the use of operable glazed doors which can be fully opened providing a seamless interaction with the natural environment.

The use of natural light in lieu of artificial light has ensured a minimising of electrical energy consumption.

Architecturally the building was conceived as an umbrella cover to a bridge deck with an upsloping broad brim eave to maximise views. A solar cut off angle of 68 ensures the customers dining at Scratchley's interact with the working port activities of Newcastle Harbour. The use of plantation timbers adds warmth to the experience and enhances the overall ambience.
