Newcastle Grammar School
The Holland building at Newcastle Grammar School is a new building for the senior school containing learning spaces, specialist teaching spaces, staff and student facilities. The planning of the building is designed around a central circulation spine, which forms an internal street linking all levels of the building.
The building facade has been designed with 'terrace house' elements to Tyrrell Street, a feature corner tower, and a scale in Newcomen Street that is compatible with the adjacent Parnell building.
A variety of building materials and textures has been incorporated within the external facade to add visual interest and to break down the scale of the building. These materials include sandstone, face brickwork, render, glass curtain walling and metal cladding.
The concrete structural frame and masonry cladding have high thermal mass to reduce the energy required to heat and cool the building. Smart control systems and sensors within the building also assist the school to reduce water, light and power consumption.
