NEWCASTLE MEMORIAL WALK
Location: Bar Beach, NSW
Location: Bar Beach, NSW
The 450m walkway and bridge structure, with 360 degree views of the city and coastline, reinstates the former cliff top walk between Strzelecki lookout and the Water Board reservoir at Bar Beach. The walkway commemorates the centenary of both the WWI landing of Allied forces at ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli, and the establishment of BHP Billiton’s Steelworks at Newcastle. Open to the public from ANZAC day 2015, the walk includes interpretive signage listing the surnames of the 3859 servicemen that enlisted in the Hunter during the Great War, chronology of battles they were involved in, and other stories about Naval, Military, Aviation, Light Horse and Nursing Services during WWI.
The $4.5m project incorporates 74 tonnes of stainless steel, prefabricated offsite to form its distinctive “DNA” strand bridge trusses, a reference to the modern scientific method employed to identify the remains of WWI casualties on the battlefields of Europe. Prefabrication as a construction method was integral to the design of the walkway, using new construction materials such as Composite Fibre Technology (CFT) and Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) to give the structure a fast build time and 70 year lifespan. Slender precast concrete “Y” columns and raised open deck walkways give the walkway minimal footprint on the scenic headland, with native re-vegetation of the surrounding landscape designed by Terras Landscape Architects. The project was delivered on time and under budget with a consultant/construction team including:
