SOLARES RESORT MAURITIUS
Solares is one of a controlled number of integrated resorts licensed for the redevelopment of existing agricultural land by the Mauritian Government under the Integrated Resort Scheme. The project brief was to establish a masterplan which provided for the local community whilst simultaneously contributing to the tourism potential of the island nation by establishing a landmark destination and range of accommodation. The majority of land is dedicated to 200 one acre individual housing lots within an exclusive secure estate, whilst the strip of land against the Flic en Flac main road accommodates a mixed use commercial precinct. Forming a gateway to the development at the head of the precinct is a multi-level casino and conference centre linked to an adjacent 250 room resort. A multiplex cinema and indoor theme park accommodate the opposite end of the precinct, with an extensive retail complex located in between. EJE were commissioned to provide five different house designs to respond to the immediate environment, emulating a tropical style, and also to provide building concepts for the commercial precinct. The design of the 200 room hotel tower element rises from the ground in a fashion not dissimilar to the volcanic escarpments whilst also billowing in plan like a sail against the prevailing trade winds. The remaining commercial architecture reflects its program in a contemporary style. In summary a masterplan and architecture has been laid down resulting in a development that integrates the community with tourism, the nation’s growing industry.
