EJE Architecture has recently presented its design for a new 500 bed hospital in Central Province, Papua New Guinea, to the country’s Prime Minister, Health Minister and other dignitaries. The 500mil Kina (approx. $250mil AUD) project will improve the health care capabilities of the Central Province Region with its upgrading of infrastructure and revitalization of primary health care services. Architecturally, the state of the art hospital complex embraces PNG’s unique cultural character with strong emphasis placed on family involvement, community activity and the integration of landscape within the precinct. The hard “institutional” edge of many western hospital facilities is avoided in the design of the building, with a feathered radial plan surrounding an expansive central courtyard, and with references to traditional PNG art and architecture incorporated into the facades.
