EJE Architecture continue their delivery of award winning multi-residential projects with the Grand Central Apartments winning the Residential – Multiple Housing category in the Australian Institute of Architects Newcastle Awards. The jury described the project as “a fine example of the integration of two disparate heritage buildings resulting in a modern multi-residential building”.
The design process drew on EJE Architecture’s heritage expertise and successful experience in adaptive re-use. Although not Heritage listed, the existing buildings were retained as EJE Architecture believed they played an important role in the existing streetscape, particularly given the close proximity of the State Listed Post Office buildings. The bulk of the new multi-storey buildings were then setback, a design viewed favourably by the NCC Urban Design Consultative Group.
