The Beach Hotel

The Beach Hotel is the spiritual home to Australia’s oldest board riding club, and a National Surfing reserve. The levity of bringing a much treasured venue back to life and offer her back to her community, informed the aesthetic and pragmatic briefs. By mining the halcyon essence of Newcastle in the 1970s and 80s we had a chance to resonate with patrons, offering a rich storytelling palette with evocative moments.

Ground floor welcomes a new generation to the era of the fish-n-chippery milk bar/ bottlo. The design aimed for simplicity and authenticity. Main floor sees the bar restored as a memory of the original form and an open kitchen pizza oven.

First Floor, Peregrin (charcoal) Restaurant was a paired back aesthetic back to a simple but refined timber palette, (like the original 1800’s hotel) and worked with strict acoustic requirements and low ceilings, to draw focus to the plate and ocean.
