The Hughes residence is situated on an elevated site overlooking Belmont Yacht Club. The new dwelling is located on the approximate position of the original house and was designed to be respectful of the adjacent heritage house to the west. The house is a large, 5 bedroom, two-storey dwelling, but was designed with the second level incorporated into the roof. This reduces the perceived scale of the house and along with the lightweight weatherboard cladding and metal roof, ensures the home sits comfortably in the street and when viewed from the lake.
A comfortable, relaxed feeling is achieved with generous living spaces opening up to a large covered patio with extensive views to the north over the lake. The client wanted to include extensive built-in joinery and timber work, achieving a “Hamptons” feeling for the spaces.
