Birubi Point has been used as a meeting place and lookout for millennia. With expansive views over Stockton bight towards Newcastle the site is one of the harshest coastal locations. EJE Architecture worked closely with clients Port Stephens Council and Birubi Point SLSC to create the new $4.5M surf life saving club: an assured low scale development which sits quietly in the landscape.

The program is organised around an external staircase connecting the existing carpark on the edge of a hill to the beach below. The stair splits the building into two: to the west of the stair is the surf club which includes a function space, patrol tower and surf craft storage area. To the east: the public amenities and café which also includes a kiosk and caretakers residence. Constructed from robust, corrosion and vandal resistant materials the buildings are nestled into the side of the hill, maintaining views of the beach and dunes from the carpark level and providing an observation deck directly above the surf club catering for the hundreds of tourists visiting the site daily.
