Christ Church Cathedral

Newcastle, NSW

Following the 1989 Newcastle earthquake, EJE Architecture led the innovative stabilisation and strengthening project to reinforce the substantially weakened massive brick structure. The project involved the invisible insertion of approximately 5 kilometres of stainless steel reinforcing bar into all masonry elements of the building without the need for major demolition as was proposed immediately following the earthquake.

EJE also completed a major refurbishment of all finishes and services for the Cathedral to upgrade it to current day standards. A unique and innovative project EJE are proud to have been involved in a significant historic chapter in the Cathedral’s story.
