UoN Engineering Precinct

University of Newcastle, Callaghan Campus

The Engineering Precinct Project is the revitalisation of existing spaces within Building F and S to improve the student experience. The brief for Building F comprises the conversion of enclosed rooms into a new learning common including kitchen adjacent a new outdoor covered learning space, as well as a series of small meeting rooms and workplace for HDR students. The Building S project includes the transformation of a series of brick enclosed offices and seminar rooms into a new 80 student teaching studio, adjacent student social spaces and a refurbished tiered lecture theatre.

The design seeks to communicate a story of the spirit of place in which the Faculty of Engineering resides. Inspiration was drawn from the surrounding flora and fauna as well geographical features in colouring and shaping the principle design features of the project, including the new entry feature to Building S which extends and weaves through the building interior, to the new acoustic wall linings of the lecture theatre and, the new Building F Covered Outdoor Learning structure. Internally, materials are used sparingly, and only where functionally necessary.
